All literature genres are studied.
Students will utilize a reading series as well as read novels.
Reading comprehension will be the main focus.
Students will receive weekly word lists and complete practice activities to reinforce the retention of the words and utilization of spelling rules.
Writing will involve graphical organizers as pre-writing tools. Students will participate in peer-editing and will work on revising skills. All publishing will be done in class or computer lab. Students will compose narrative, descriptive, persuasive and informative themes. Students will also have the opportunity to write poetry and work on creative writing projects.
Students will receive two full class periods of Spanish per week.
Handwriting is practiced in class and at home and will be assessed throughout the year through graded and ungraded assignments.

Students receive library instruction one time a week. This class provides students with the ability to go to the library to practice research techniques, and the ability to use reference materials such as encyclopedias, atlases, thesauruses, and dictionaries. Students are also able to practice computer research skills.
All vocabulary is utilized by students throughout all subjects in the fifth grade.
