All About Mrs. Waning
  • This is my first year teaching in at St. Joan of Arc School.
  • I have been associated with SJA as a parent, Stem Camp teacher, and  Scholastic Book Fair volunteer.
  • I previously taught third grade, first grade, and pre-k in Chicago, IL and Indianapolis, IN.
  • I graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.

Social Studies:
​
1. Geography and Maps
  • Students will learn to read a political and geographical map.  
  • Students learn to use map keys and a compass rose to read maps.  
  • Students will identify latitude and longitude lines on a map.  
  • Students will identify the seven continents and four oceans of the world.
2. Development of World Cultures and Civilizations
Students will explore the following civilizations:
  •  Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent
  •  Egypt and the Nile River Valley
  •  The Indus Valley 
  •  Ancient China 
  • Ancient Greece
  •  Ancient Italy and the Roman Empire
  • Christianity in the Ancient World
  •  Middle Ages and the Renaissance
  •  Early Civilizations in the Americas

Language Arts:

 Reading:
  • All literature genres are studied.
  • Students will utilize a reading series as well as read novels.
  • Reading comprehension will be the main focus.
Spelling:
  • Students will receive weekly word lists and complete practice activities to reinforce the retention of the words and utilization of spelling rules.
 Writing: 
  • Writing will involve graphical organizers as pre-writing tools. Students will participate in peer-editing and will work on revising skills. All publishing will be done in class or computer lab. Students will compose narrative, descriptive, persuasive and informative themes. Students will also have the opportunity to write poetry and work on creative writing projects.
Spanish:
  • Students will receive two full class periods of Spanish per week.
 Handwriting:
  • Handwriting is practiced in class and at home and will be assessed throughout the year through graded and ungraded assignments.

  • All mechanics are practiced in Daily Edits
 Library:
  • Students receive library instruction one time a week.  This class provides students with the ability to go to the library to practice research techniques, and the ability to use reference materials such as encyclopedias, atlases, thesauruses, and dictionaries. Students are also able to practice computer research skills.
 Vocabulary:
  • All vocabulary is utilized by students throughout all subjects in the fifth grade.
