Role of the Board of Education
The St. Joan of Arc School Board of Education was established by the Parish Advisory Council to be an integral part of the Parish's Mission of Education. It serves as an advisory group to the principal and the pastor, as a resource in the quest for excellence in Catholic Education. The Board of Education supports the Catholic School as a valuable component of the total Parish Ministry, and fosters the role of the family as the foundation and stimulus for the optimal growth and development of its children.
The main duties of board members include policy formation, development (fundraising, public relations, and recruitment), budget formation, and strategic planning. According to the National Catholic Educational Association, a board in a Catholic school does not discipline students, develop curriculum, approve instructional materials, hire/fire staff, write regulations, or handle grievances.

The Board generally meets the first Monday of each month, and welcomes and encourages the attendance of parents and faculty members, who are also invited to participate on the committees to help board members see the school in a realistic and practical way.
If an issue arises that a parent would like to present to the School Board of Education, the parent must contact the Secretary of the Board in writing no later than one week prior to the meeting in order to get on the agenda. Total time devoted to these issues and discussion is generally 15 minutes. This presupposes that the issue has already been addressed by appropriate school personnel (i.e., teacher, administrator, pastor). The School Board of Education should be the last resort for negative issues, since it is our hope that such issues can be resolved at lower levels through appropriate personnel.
